Sigiriya brings to mind a lofty gneiss rock outcrop shaped like abread loaf standing about 183 m (600 ft) above the surrounding plain in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The escarpments on the southern, western and northern sides bear witness to ancient occupation of the site.
