In The Red Lotus, the affection between the brother and  sister evokes such feelings of tenderness in us that we think of our own siblings.  In On Either Side of the Paddy Fields – my favourite story in this collection – the unrequited love between the two main characters in their youth and their meeting again in late middle age arouses feelings of lost love, love which endures through the years, and love regained late in life.  The end brought tears to my eyes.  In the story The Man Without a Purpose, we do not feel much affinity for the protagonist Piyasiri, until we come to the point when he visits Bellwood just to get a glimpse of the place where Chandralekha sat long years ago.  We realize what a sensitive and vulnerable person he is.  I love the way Prof. Amarakeerthi ends the story.  At the end of a function at a school, after all the festivities are over the writer happens to see a teacher simple, honest unfettered by materialistic ambitions walking towards a group of students whom he has to escort to a singing competition the following day.  And the writer thinks ‘I wish I could be him’.  Doesn’t it stir in us a longing for the simple life that we have left behind?
